Q: A beginners guide to search engine success
What are the best methods to improve my web site's listing on search engines?

A: If you know of any tried and tested methods, please feel free to contact me to have them added. For now here's a few points to get you started. Remember while employing these methods will help you, it does not guarantee you a #1 listing. Perseverence is the key!

    1) Before you begin pick 3-5 central keywords you want to rank for. Try not to pick anything to specific, as you'll be facing a lot of competition.

    2) Invite people to link to your website, using those three keywords in the anchor text. In our case, we asked people to link to our site saying "asp website hosting". Google loves it! NB, make sure the sites that link to you are listed themselves on google. You can check this by typing the address into google. If they aren't listed, they won't come up, and they're no good.

    3) Put your keywords in your title tags, and put them first- they are more important even than the website name.

    4) Make sure your keywords are mentioned a plenty in your actual text on the first page of the website. Keyword rich text is a big point for google. Check your keyword density, and makes sure it's over at least 1%. If you can get up to 5% then you're onto something.

    5) Never, ever use frames- search engines find it very hard to crawl (read your website content) past frames. They may be useful in certain situations, but they won't help you rank high.

    6) Never ever use yoursite/index.php?pg=about - or anything with php or asp code in. While the search engines can sometimes read it- they won't thank you or rank you for it.

    7) Despite what advice you may get, don't use 'doorways' / 'hidden text' and other dubious methods. If you aren't careful, your website will end up getting blacklisted by the search engines.

    8) List yourself on Dmoz. The other search engines will actually find your site from it. Google also ranks its as a big plus if you are on there.

    9) Optimise your alt tags in your site images. Put your three keywords in there, in a RELEVANT sentance. I.e. don't spam them in, put something like "Meat Pies from Joe's Pie Shop".

This means that you and your clients will get the benefits of faster access times and improved search engine positions. If your web site is hosted on a server located in the US then it wont be listed very highly, or at all on a UK server such as google.co.uk.
